A meeting was held this past Tuesday to discuss the planned Daniel Island Marina on the Wando River. The new marina is expected to include around 370 floating-dock slips and construction is to begin at the end of the year. It will be an expansion of the children’s docks on Daniel Island.
The Daniel Island Company was granted permission to build 208 dry-dock slips, 320 wet-dock slips, and 20 day slips. There are day slips which will be open to visitors who want to access the island by sea.
Originally the company planned the new marina for the express purpose of providing a yacht club for islanders. According to McKenzie, vice-president of development for the Daniel Island Company the creation of another private organization in the Daniel Island community would “not the best thing for the island, due to the very limited amount of memberships available.” Thus the marina on Daniel Island will be open to the public to help generate revenue for the little island community.
The projected cost is $20 million and it should take approximately 18 months to complete. The facility will include a full-service marina, a restaurant, boat ramp, community fishing pier, and a waterfront park. The park will include some 20 miles of scenic trails and two miles of waterfront access.
